President Obama says smartphones cannot be ‘black boxes’; taking ‘absolutist view’ will not work

obamamacbook

Speaking to Texas Tribune editor Evan Smith at SXSW, President Obama said that smartphones cannot be allowed to be “black boxes” that are not accessible by the government. He said that tech companies should work with the government to solve such issues, instead of leaving the matter for Congress to solve.

Obama further said that one cannot take an “absolutist view” on this issue, and that having strong encryption on your phone “no matter what” does not “strike the kind of balance we have lived with for 200,300 years.” After all, there are many places where American citizens have created a balance by trading their privacy for better security, like by allowing law agencies to use of warrants to search homes etc.
“The question we now have to ask is, if technologically it is possible to make an impenetrable device or system, where the encryption is so strong there’s no key, there’s no door at all, then how do we apprehend the child pornographer? How do we solve or disrupt a terrorist plot?” Obama said. “If in fact you can’t crack that at all, government can’t get in, then everybody’s walking around with a Swiss bank account in their pocket.”

President Obama also said that leaving this matter with Congress and other lawmakers will not be the right thing to do, as the end result would be “sloppy and rushed and it will go through Congress in ways that have not been thought through.”
The president further adds that a compromise between Apple and the government is definitely possible, and the two just need to figure out a way to make sure that the encryption and the key to unlock it remains as strong as possible, with access to the latter being given to a very few number of people.
Apple has received a lot of flak from government agencies for not following the court order and its fight against the FBI. The Department of Justice even accused Apple of being “false” and “corrosive” in its motion.

Samsung requests the U.S. Supreme Court take on the Apple patent case

image ApplevSamsung
The battle between Samsung and Apple continues, as the former of the two levies its one last attempt to avoid paying out any damages.
According to a report published by Re/code, Samsung has appealed to the Supreme Court in the United States to take on the patent case it has been locked in with Apple for quite a stretch of time now. In the appeal, Samsung states that there’s an overarching problem with patent cases in general, especially when it comes to information provided to jurors, and that in its specific case, not enough information was provided to the jury for them to make an educated determination — because they couldn’t understand the patents.
“Samsung is escalating this case because it believes that the way the laws were interpreted is not in line with modern times,” it said in a statement. “If the current legal precedent stands, it could diminish innovation, stifle competition, pave the way for design patent troll litigation and negatively impact the economy and consumers.”
It’s an interesting step, but not all that surprising. Samsung, for its part, is simply making an attempt to get the money back it has already agreed to pay Apple in the beginning of December, which should be delivered to Apple at some point today, December 14. If the Supreme Court does grant Samsung’s appeal, and the decision goes in Samsung’s favor, then Apple would need to repay that $548 million back to Samsung.
So while it looked like it all might be coming to an end earlier this month, the case continues to rage on.

Microsoft’s digital assisant Cortana now available for iOS

cortana-03
After months of beta testing, Microsoft today released the final version of Cortana — its digital personal assistant — for iOS and Android. The company also released new Cortana apps for Windows 10 users that makes it possible to share your data with your Android or iOS running smartphones.

Due to the various restrictions imposed by Apple, Cortana on iOS will not be as smart or integrate as heavily into the OS as it does on Windows 10 running phones or PCs. This means that you wont be able to bring up the digital assistant by shouting “Hey Cortana” to your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Additionally, it only limits the digital assisant capable of tracking your flights, packages, and display relevant local news and weather. You can also ask Cortana questions like you can with Siri.
Nonetheless, for people who are heavily invested into the Windows ecosystem, using Cortana might just be more beneficial despite its limited integration with iOS.
The restrictions also means that the Android version of Cortana is far superior to its iOS sibling, with features like the ability to send text messages to missed calls right from a Windows 10 PC missing on the latter.
Microsoft had earlier made Cortana available as a beta download to over 2,000 TestFlight members in late November.
Did you beta test Cortana on your iPhone? If yes, did you like it? Do you think you will switch over to it from Siri?

How to add awesome live wallpapers to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

Live Photo on iPhone 6s
Looking for some terrific live wallpapers for your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Thanks to a new third-party app, you can now download awesome animated wallpapers that come alive with 3D Touch. Here’s how to get started.

Download Live Wallpapers

First, download the Live Wallpapers app by Nick Lauer from the App Store. This is the first app we’ve found that offers animated wallpapers for 3D Touch, though there may be others out there that we didn’t spot. We expect many more to come later, too.

Find a live wallpaper

Once you have the app installed, open it up and you’ll find all the live wallpapers on offer. It’s not possible to view them all as thumbnails yet, unfortunately, so you’ll need to swipe through them to find one that you like.
When you have one, simply tap the “Save” button to add it to your Camera Roll.

Apply it!

You can now return to your home screen and open the built-in Photos app, where you’ll find the live wallpaper you just downloaded in the “All Photos” album. To apply it, open the image, tap the share button, then select “Use as Wallpaper.”
Before tapping “Set,” ensure the “Live Photo” option is highlighted.
And that’s it! You now have a new live wallpaper, which you can activate on the home screen using a 3D Touch press.

Apple launches new Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader to support iPad Pro’s USB 3.0 transfer speeds

Apple Lightning to SD Card Reader
After the launch of the iPad Pro, one interesting detail came to surface: The big tablet supports USB 3.0 for even faster transfer speeds.
Now, almost a month after that discovery, Apple has launched its first official adapter to support those faster transfer speeds. It’s a brand new Lightning to SD Card Reader, but it looks the same as the previous version. In fact, it even has the same price and name. The only thing that’s changed is the support for USB 3.0 transfer speeds — probably the most important addition the card reader could get, anyway.
The SD Card Reader’s functionality has remained the same, too. Owners can use the reader, connected to their iPad Pro, to insert an SD memory card and transfer photos or videos from that card to the tablet. Considering the iPad Pro doesn’t have an SD card reader built in, the adapter is a necessary accessory for those that need/want to transfer photos from their memory card directly to the tablet without having to worry about the cloud or wireless transfers.
As it should, Apple notes on the new SD Card Reader’s page that the faster transfer speeds are only supported on the iPad Pro, as the other iPad models, including the brand new iPad mini 4, don’t support USB 3.0.
“The Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW, along with SD and HD video formats, including H.264 and MPEG-4. It supports data transfer at up to USB 3 speeds on iPad Pro, and up to USB 2 speeds on all other iPad and iPhone models.*”
For those in the market for one of these new accessories, keep an eye on the model number of each. The model number that supports the iPad Pro’s USB 3.0 transfer speeds is: MJYT2AM/A.
A link to the adapter is available below for those that want to check it out. It retails for $29.00.

7 reasons why Apple’s iPhone 6s Smart Battery case is better than other battery cases

iPhone 6s Smart Battery case
Earlier today, Apple launched an official $99 Smart Battery case for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6. This is the first time that Apple has ever launched an official battery pack or case for its devices, and it has definitely taken quite a few people by surprise.

Mozilla launches a new iOS ad-blocker called Focus

Mozilla Focus
Ad-blockers have been around for quite some time for desktop machines connected to the ‘net, but for iOS users, the experience is just getting off the ground.
And in a big way, with plenty of different ad-blockers already available in the iOS App Store for those that don’t want to see advertisements on websites they visit on their mobile devices. Now Mozilla is getting in on the fun, too, as initially reported by Forbes. The new ad-blocker, which is currently rolling out into the iOS App Store, is called Focus.
The new option retrieves its blacklist from Disconnect.me, which is a browser plug-in that boasts upwards of 5,000 trackers, of which many have been, or still are, associated with advertisement networks. Add to that, Focus will use heuristics to identify any content that happens to follow a user from one site to another, and squash the tracker on the fly.
Right now, Focus only works with Safari, due to the restrictions that Apple has in place within iOS to manage content blockers. Mozilla, for its part, is hoping that Apple changes that strategy at some point in the future, so users can use Focus with Firefox.
A link to download Focus is available below, but it might not be available just yet by the time of publication.

Apple launches official $99 Smart Battery case for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6

iPhone 6s Smart Battery case
Surprising almost everyone, Apple today launched its first official battery case for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6. Dubbed the Smart Battery Case, Apple boasts that it will improve the talk time of the iPhone 6s to up to 25 hours, allow you to browse the internet for 18 hours straight or playback videos for up to 20 hours.
Unlike other third-party battery cases, the Smart Battery case integrates nicely with iOS as well. When connected to the device, the remaining battery percentage of the case itself is shown on the iOS lock screen alongside the battery percentage of the phone. This functionality is not present in any other battery case for the iPhone.iPhone 6s Smart Battery case
The internal of the case features a soft microfibre lining to keep your iPhone free from scratches and dirt. It also features a passthrough at the bottom that give access to the Lightning port that makes it possible to connect other Lightning accessories to the device with the case still plugged in.
From the official pictures, I don’t particularly like the hump that the battery case introduces on the iPhone 6s, and it makes the whole phone look ugly. I am actually surprised that Apple decided to launch a smart battery case for the iPhone that spoils its beautiful design. But at least, by launching this case, Apple does accept that the battery life of the iPhone 6s is inadequate.
The $99 Smart Battery case works with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, and is available in Charcoal Gray and White color. It is already available for purchase through Apple’s online store. There is no version of the case that works with the iPhone 6 Plus presumably because it already offers an all-day battery life.
