Cydia creator Jay Freeman, a.k.a saurik, has shared some interesting jailbreaking related numbers with TechCrunch.According to him, over 20 million devices, 22,780,029 to be precise, were seen running Cydia (which implies they are jailbroken) in the past two months. These devices include not just the iPhone but the iPod touch and the iPad as well.

pod2g Speaks on iOS 6 Jailbreak, iPhone 5 & More
So ever since Apple released iOS 6 in September, we’ve been hoping that pod2g will work his magic and release a jailbreak for iOS 6 and newer iOS devices.
Sebastien Page of iDownloadblog interviewed pod2g where he discussed the current state of the iOS 6 jailbreak among other things. Here’s an excerpt of that interview:
Where do you see the jailbreak community in 12 months? Are we on the right track or have we hit a wall?
I’m very confident about the next 6
months. I honestly believe that iOS 6 will be jailbroken and that
developers will keep coming up with more quality apps. Discussions about
future tweaks during JailbreakCon have opened new doors. Creativity
won’t stop.
Regarding future iOS versions, I don’t
really know what to think. I believe Apple will make it harder and
harder to find and develop jailbreaks in a timely manner.
My message to Apple is the following: why
not stop the fight and let users install unsigned applications, just
like it is possible on OS X? It could be done the right way to let
people install tweaks while making sure piracy is limited.
I am convinced that it would allow iOS to gain market shares over Android.
You recently said you were not working on the iOS 6 jailbreak. What would make you change your mind?
There is a big chance I change my mind. I
actually spent a few hours on it since WWJC, but I still don’t have
enough time to work on it.
Working with @planetbeing motivates me a lot. He’s always very resourceful and he raises the bar.
It seems that the entire
community is relying on you and a handful of other hackers. Can you feel
a pressure from jailbreak users?
Yes I can feel a strong pressure, but I
believe most of my followers understand that working on a jailbreak
isn’t our full-time job and that we do our best to conciliate work life,
personal life, and work on a jailbreak.
I often receive messages on Twitter telling me to slow down, to take our time, and maybe wait for iOS 6.1, etc…
Chpwn recently showed off a
jailbroken iPhone 5 running iOS 6. Can you tell us what he did? Is it a
good starting point for an iOS 6 jailbreak?
In short, this “jailbreak” is based on a
developer certificate. It doesn’t alter the kernel allowing for a real,
full jailbreak, which is why we call it a “failbreak”. It’s a very good
start because it allows security researchers to have access to the file
system, to modify any iOS file, and execute unsigned code at the root
level. On the other end, this failbreak can’t be used as a public
jailbreak.
How many iOS devices do you own?
iPod touch 3rd Gen, iPod touch 4th Gen, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPad 3.
Are they all jailbroken?
All my devices are jailbroken except for
the ones I use daily (iPhone 4S, and iPad 3). These two aren’t
jailbroken for two reasons:
to force me to work on the iOS 6 jailbreak and because I am currently developing an official application, I want to be able to test it in a stock configuration

If you’re not working on a jailbreak, can you tell us more about what you’re doing these days?
As I mentioned above, I don’t have much
time because I am in the process of creating a company, and I’m actively
working on a software. Since I have taken a sabbatical, my future
revenues depend on this work, which is why I’m dedicating 100% of my
time to it.
He had some advice for those who want to become the next pod2g:
First, this is not given to anyone. You
must have some solid skills in development, but also in the
understanding of how modern operating systems work. To start, you must
read numerous books and white papers about the topic. The most
interesting ones about hacking iOS are:

- A Guide to Kernel Exploitation: Attacking the Core (Enrico Perla, Massimiliano Odani)
- The Mac Hacker’s Handbook (Charlie Miller, Dino Dai Zovi)
- The iOS Hacker’s Handbook (Charlie Miller, Dino Dai Zovi & others)
Only once you have assimilated the notions explained in these books will you be able to start working on jailbreaking.
The goal isn’t success. The goal is to help the community develop tools.
The secret is passion.
And the following are pod2g’s must-have jailbreak tweaks:- OpenSSH: to easily access the iPhone file system and for security research
- SBSettings: for quick access to the iPhone settings
- Barrel: I love the geekiness of it. Everyone knows your iPhone is jailbroken when you use it.

- 5 icons dock: to add Twitter without moving stock icons in the dock
The first one is to my followers, whom I
want to thank for their patience and their support. I can’t guarantee
that I will work on a jailbreak in the next few days, but as soon as I
have time on my hands, I’ll be back.
The second message is to Apple, because I
was disappointed about the iPhone, which has no significant added value
compared to the iPhone 4S, especially in France where there is no 4G
LTE support. I can’t find the innovation in this product that I was able
to find in previous models. You have to take risks, add new features
while improving interactivity. I’m worried about the future, especially
with this closed OS and pressure coming from Android.
It’s a pity that pod2g doesn’t have the time to work on the
jailbreak, but we hope that he can take some time out from his busy
schedule to work on it.Nevertheless, we wish him all the best with his new venture.

Apple Makes Jailbreaking More Difficult In iOS 6.1
While we patiently wait for the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6, it looks like Apple continues to work hard to up the ante in the cat and mouse game with jailbreakers.
iOS hacker and security expert Stefan Esser aka i0n1c has tweeted that Apple has added more protection, which will make it tougher to jailbreak iOS 6.1.
It is widely speculated that iOS 6.1 beta 4 is the final beta and Apple could release iOS 6.1 in the first half of January 2013. Though Essar hasn’t provided any further details, jailbreakers should follow the golden rule and avoid upgrading to iOS 6.1 when Apple releases it to the public to increase their chances of jailbreaking their device.
Apple has released four beta versions of iOS 6.1 developers (beta 1, beta 2, beta 3, beta 4), but we’re yet to discover any major new feature for iOS device users, which indicates that iOS 6.1 is probably a security update to make it even more difficult for hackers to jailbreak it.
It has been more than 3 months since iOS 6 was released, but there has been no clear indications that a jailbreak for it will be released anytime soon, so all we can do is continue to wait patiently.
How To Jailbreak iOS 6.1 Beta 4
If you’re a developer and have installed iOS 6.1 beta 4 on
your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 4G that was seeded few days
back, then the good news is that you can use Redsn0w to jailbreak your
device.
In this article we show you how to jailbreak iOS 6.1 beta 4 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G using Redsn0w.
Here are some important points to note before you proceed.
- This guide is meant for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G users.
- Warning: If you depend on Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone, then DO NOT update to iOS 6.1.
- Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 only supports a tethered jailbreak, which means that you need to connect your iPhone to the computer on every reboot (except iPhone 3GS with older bootrom). It is currently not possible to jailbreak iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad mini and iPod Touch 5G.
- Please note that jailbreaking your iOS device may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.

You can follow these step-by-step instructions to jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G on iOS 6.1 beta 4, beta 3, beta 2 or beta 1:
Step 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 (Redsn0w 0.9.15 beta 3) from this link and save the application in a folder named “Redsn0w” on your desktop.
Step 2: Download iOS
6.0 firmware file (yes, the trick is to point Redsn0w to the iOS 6.0
firmware file) for your iOS device from the links mentioned below:
- iPhone
- iPod touch
Step 2: Connect your device to the computer and double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application. Navigate to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application.
Windows 7 users should run the exe in
Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select
Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this
program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7
users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).
Step 3: Click on Extras button.
Step 4: Then click on the Select IPSW button. Navigate and select the firmware file download in Step 2. It should successfully identify it.
Step 5: Go back to Redsn0w’s main page and click on the Jailbreak button.
Step 6: Redsn0w will now start preparing the jailbreak data.
Step 7: You will now be prompted to select the jailbreak options. Make sure Cydia is selected and click on the Next button to continue. iPhone 3GS users can also select Enable battery percentage option.
Step 8: You will now need to prompted to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:(a) Hold the Power button on your iOS device down for 3 seconds:
(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:
(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device:
Step 9: Your iOS device should reboot now. Please remember to release the Home button.
Step 10: Your iOS device will reboot again and Redsn0w will now begin uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.
Step 11: You will be notified once the jailbreaking process is complete. Click on the Ok and then Quit button to exit the application.
Step 12: The rest of
the process will take place on your iOS device, wait for it to complete.
Your iOS device will reboot once again (which could take approximately 5
minutes). You will now see the Home screen on your iOS device, but
Cydia would still be missing, that’s because you still need to tether
boot your iOS device using Redsn0w. So follow the steps mentioned below.
Boot tethered:
Step 13: Launch Redsn0w again.
Step 14: Click on Extras button.
Step 15: Then click on the Select IPSW button. Navigate and select the firmware file download in Step 2.
Step 16: Then click on the Just Boot button.
Step 17: You will now
be prompted to plug your iOS device to the computer and switch it OFF
again. Follow the instructions and click on the Next button to move to the next screen:
Step 18: You will now need to put your iOS device into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:
(a) Hold the Power button on your iOS device down for 3 seconds:
(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:
(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device:
Step 19: Redsn0w will
recognize the iOS device in DFU mode and apply the limerain exploit
(remember to release the Home button). Your iOS device will reboot and a
pineapple logo will appear, indicating a tethered boot.
Step 20: Wait for the process to complete, once it is complete, you should see the Lock screen on your iOS device.
That’s it, your iOS device has now been
successfully jailbroken and you should see Cydia on the Home screen. If
you don’t find it on the Home screen, please don’t panic, search for it
using Spotlight.
Note: Since Redsn0w
currently supports only a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS with
older bootrom, you will need to follow steps 13 to Steps 20, each time
you reboot your iPhone or iPod touch to be able to use the jailbreak
apps like Cydia.

Watch pod2g, MuscleNerd and planetbeing Discuss iOS 6 Jailbreak
The organisers of the Hack in the Box security conference have uploaded a one hour long panel discussion on iOS and OS X security featuring popular iOS hackers pod2g, planetbeing and MuscleNerd along with Mark Dowd, a researcher with Azimuth Security.
Although their talk spanned across a wide variety of topics, the focus was obviously on iOS jailbreaking, and specifically the difficulties the teams have to tackle in their course of coming up with an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak.
On the lack of a software unlock
MuscleNerd attributes the relative inactivity in the unlocking scene due to the ease in which you can pay a third-party vendor to get your phone factory unlocked. These unlocks, established by adding your iPhone’s IMEI to Apple’s unlock database, are in most cases permanent and persist across multiple iOS versions unlike earlier unlocking solutions.Increased kernel security in iOS 6
Mark Dowd, who managed to get Cydia running on iOS 6 through a kernel exploit, says that Apple’s tightened the security of the kernel in iOS 6 quite a bit, making it harder to writer exploits targeted at the kernel. The exploit that he used didn’t enable a “permanent” jailbreak. His exploit, although useful, doesn’t ensure the release of a jailbreak anytime soon since a userland exploit is needed to trigger the kernel exploit. pod2g says that he’s working on finding this userland exploit, which might take time.The Apple TV 3 Jailbreak
Although many of the internals, including the kernel, of the Apple TV 3 is the same as iOS, the lack of a “mobile backup service” makes injecting exploits difficult. Because the Apple TV rarely talks to iTunes, there aren’t as many vulnerabilities or as hackers call it “injection vectors.” pod2g says that many of their exploits for previous versions of iOS work on the Apple TV 3, just that there isn’t any way to send the exploit file to the right place in the Apple TV’s filesystem.Here’s the entire video, embedded for your viewing:

Apple overtook Samsung to become the number one mobile phone
vendor in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to research
firm Strategy Analytics.
According to the report, Apple shipped 17.7 million iPhones, grabbing a record 34% of the market share in the fourth quarter of 2012. It was up sharply from 12.8 million units shipped and 25.4 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2011.
Meanwhile, Samsung shipped 16.8 million phones, which accounted
for 32.3 per cent share to take the number two position. LG shipped 4.7
million phones for 9 percent share of the U.S. market to come in third.
Apple’s performance is impressive when you consider that the report is talking about mobile phones, which includes smartphones and feature phones, not just smartphones. While Apple has become the top smartphone vendor in the U.S. before, it’s the first time ever that the company has taken the U.S. mobile

Redsn0w 0.9.8b3: Tethered iOS 4.3.4 Jailbreak For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch Released
iPhone Dev Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.8b3 for iOS 4.3.4 to jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Yesterday, Apple released iOS 4.3.4 to fix the security vulnerability that Comex had used in JailbreakMe 3.0, which is one of the easiest solutions to jailbreak an iOS device.

But it supports only a tethered jailbreak, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot.
iPhone hacking expert Stefan Esser who goes by the Twitter handle i0n1c, credited for developing the untethered jailbreak used in tools like Redsn0w, PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze for iOS 4.3.1, iOS 4.3.2 and iOS 4.3.3 has tweeted that it may not be possible to release an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 anytime soon.
Report Claims Apple May Launch Next iPhone in June
AppleInsider reports that a Foxconn recruiter revealed that Apple will release the next iPhone in June, during a program on TV Tokyo's "World Business Satellite" (WBS) show, which included footage of Foxconn's personnel recruitment office - Apple's largest manufacturing partner in China.

In one recorded scene, a woman asked a Foxconn recruiter how many people the factory is looking to hire.
"We're looking for 18,000 employees…for the fifth-generation phone," he said.
"Is that because demand is high for the 'iPhone 5?'" she asked.
"That's right. It will come out in June."
While it seems a little confusing as the recruiter and the woman have used fifth-generation iPhone and iPhone 5 in the conversation, the fact that the recruiter says it is coming in June, seems to suggest that they're referring to the yet-to-be released sixth generation iPhone. It remains to be seen if Apple ends up calling it the new iPhone or iPhone 5 (seems to be the most popular moniker so far) or will keep it simple and make our lives easier by calling it iPhone 6 (sixth generation iPhone).
Anyways, coming back to the topic, we're skeptical that Apple will launch the new iPhone in less than a year of launching iPhone 4S, which is still selling like hot cakes and as 9 to 5 Mac points out, the source also doesn't seem to be credible.

According to recent rumors, the next iPhone will be coming in fall 2012, which will feature the same 3.5-inch screen or very close to it, support 4G LTE networks and come with a new micro dock connector.
