Now, almost a month after that discovery, Apple has launched its first official adapter to support those faster transfer speeds. It’s a brand new Lightning to SD Card Reader, but it looks the same as the previous version. In fact, it even has the same price and name. The only thing that’s changed is the support for USB 3.0 transfer speeds — probably the most important addition the card reader could get, anyway.
As it should, Apple notes on the new SD Card Reader’s page that the faster transfer speeds are only supported on the iPad Pro, as the other iPad models, including the brand new iPad mini 4, don’t support USB 3.0.
“The Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW, along with SD and HD video formats, including H.264 and MPEG-4. It supports data transfer at up to USB 3 speeds on iPad Pro, and up to USB 2 speeds on all other iPad and iPhone models.*”For those in the market for one of these new accessories, keep an eye on the model number of each. The model number that supports the iPad Pro’s USB 3.0 transfer speeds is: MJYT2AM/A.
A link to the adapter is available below for those that want to check it out. It retails for $29.00.
