Apple Working on Game Controller For iPhone?

AnandTech published their review of the new iPad earlier today.
In the review, they highlight that one of the advantages of Android based tablets is the support for wired and wireless game controllers and have revealed something interesting.

AnandTech claims that Apple has been working on a game controller for iOS devices.
I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.
As AnandTech points out while most games work quite well with touch, there are some games that would be more suitable with physical buttons that are available on game controllers.
We've seen third-party controllers such as iControlPad,  Ion Audio's iCade game controllers, Think Geek's iCade 8-bitty controller etc or accessories such as Fling. These game controllers connect to iOS devices via Bluetooth.
It will be interesting to see if Apple's internal project turns into a commercial product some day. What do you think? Would you be interested?
