Apple Overtakes Samsung To Become No.1 Mobile Phone Vendor In The U.S.

Apple overtook Samsung to become the number one mobile phone vendor in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.
According to the report, Apple shipped 17.7 million iPhones, grabbing a record 34% of the market share in the fourth quarter of 2012. It was up sharply from  12.8 million units shipped and 25.4 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Meanwhile, Samsung shipped 16.8 million phones, which accounted for 32.3 per cent share to take the number two position. LG shipped 4.7 million phones for 9 percent share of the U.S. market to come in third.
Apple’s performance is impressive when you consider that the report is talking about mobile phones, which includes smartphones and feature phones, not just smartphones.  While Apple has become the top smartphone vendor in the U.S. before, it’s the first time ever that the company has taken the U.S. mobile
phone vendor crown.

Strategy Analysts said that generous carrier subsidies, and extensive marketing around the new iPhone 5 model helped Apple to claim the number one spot. Samsung has been the top mobile phone vendor since 2008.
Samsung still managed to be the top mobile phone vendor in the U.S. for the full year 2012, shipping 53 million phones for 31.8 percent market share. Apple came in second, with 26.2 per cent, shipping 43.7 million iPhones.
