Jury orders Samsung to pay $119.6 million; Apple to pay $158,000 in damages for infringing each others Patents

In breaking news, the jury has reached a unanimous verdict in the second Apple vs. Samsung trial.

After three days of deliberations, the jury has found that Samsung willfully infringed on two out of five Apple’s patents. 
The jury has ordered Samsung to pay Apple $119.6 million in damages, which is significantly lower than the $2.2 billion that Apple was seeking. Samsung argued that it should pay only $38.4 million or $1.75 per device in damages.
The jury found that all Samsung devices infringed on Apple’s ’647 data detectors patent, while only some Samsung devices were found to have infringed on ’721, slide-to-unlock. Judge Koh had already found that Samsung had infringed on Apple’s ’172 autocorrect patent earlier in January.
The jury did not find Samsung devices infringed on ’959, universal search, or on ’414, background syncing.
The jury also found that Apple’s FaceTime infringed on Samsung’s 449 patent related to video streaming, and has ordered Apple to pay $158,000 in damages to the Korean company. The jury did not find Apple to infringe on Samsung’s ’239 patent.
This second lawsuit started on March 31st. Samsung was ordered to pay $1.09 billion in damages to Apple for infringing 6 of its patent in the first lawsuit. It was later revised down to $890 million after a retrial. Google has apparently agreed to cover legal fees and pay potential damages as some patents in the lawsuit, as they are features found in Android operating system.
Today’s judgement is unlikely to end the patent war between the two companies. Both sides are expected to appeal the ruling.

Apple has issued the following statement:

“We are grateful to the jury and the court for their service. Today’s ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: That Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products. We are fighting to defend the hard work that goes into beloved products like the iPhone, which our employees devote their lives to designing and delivering for our customers.”

Update 2:
It looks like Samsung may have to pay more than $119.6 million as MacRumors reports that Apple lawyers have identified an error in calculation of damages by the jury. The Galaxy S2 which was found to infringe on Apple’s ’172 autocorrect received no damages.
