One way to spot a fake Apple charger

fake-apple-chargerIt is easy to identify fake Apple chargers when you expose the innards, but you don’t always have the opportunity to take them apart. How do you spot the external differences that’ll signal this is a legitimate Apple product and not a cheap knockoff that resembles the real thing? Lifehacker has a useful tip that could help in this identification.

Earlier this week, engineer Ken Shirriff tore down a fake Apple charger, revealing the shoddy and possibly hazardous construction that should dissuade all customers from buying these counterfeit units. Reading through Shirriff ‘s detailed teardown analysis, Lifehacker editor Whitson Gordon noticed one key detail that customers can use to differentiate the counterfeit chargers from the real ones.
From the outside, the real charger (left) and counterfeit charger (right) are almost identical. If you look very closely, you can spot are a few differences in the text: The counterfeit removed “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China” and the manufacturer “Foxlink”, probably for legal reasons. (But strangely, the counterfeit still says “TM and © 2010 Apple Inc.”) The counterfeit charger displays a bunch of certifications (such as UL) that it doesn’t actually have. As you will see below, there is no way it could pass safety testing.
This wording apparently is common among counterfeit products that try to mimic Apple products, but are careful not to duplicate them exactly. If you purchase a charger from a third-party seller, it might be a good idea to check the branding noted above to ensure the item is an authentic Apple product and not a knockoff. Knockoffs may be less expensive, but their poor construction may put your device and possibly even your life at risk if the charger were to spark a fire.
If you want to save some money on a charger, you should avoid the unknown brands and stick to reputable brands, such as Monoprice, Griffin and other popular Apple accessory makers.
