Flappy Bird might have taken the App Store by storm
a few months ago, but I can think of a few smash-hit game franchises
that launched much before that. The first one that pops into my mind is Infinity Blade, which I think opened many people’s eyes to just how powerful gaming can be on the iPad. Then there is Angry Birds, which has been a remarkably successful series for Finnish game maker Rovio.
The latest spinoff in the Angry Birds franchise was released earlier today in Angry Birds Epic, which you can read about ahead. App Recap
is a daily column that promotes the best new, updated and discounted
apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Angry Birds Epic wasn’t the only
impressive new game to hit the App Store this morning, so read ahead for
a look at 12 other apps that made the list…
New Apps

It’s finally here. The latest installment in the ever so popular Angry Birds franchise has arrived in the form of
Angry Birds Epic.
The subtly humorous game has epic battles between your favorite pig
characters Red, Chuck and Bomb and classic evil pig villains like King
Pig, Wiz Pig and Prince Porky. Angry Birds Epic is
free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad.

It has been an interesting road to launching on the App Store, but
Skype 5.0 appears to finally be available
for iPhone users worldwide. The cross-platform VoIP and messaging app
has been updated with a redesigned user interface, richer and more
reliable messaging, in-app notifications and more. Skype for iPad has
yet to be updated, but that is coming soon.
Free.
VVVVVV
is the iOS adaption of the 2010 indie platformer game of the same name,
made by the creators of Super Hexagon. The game is a challenging
platformer that reminds me of something you would see on an arcade
machine in the early 1990s. Go for the highest score possible, and try
not to die. VVVVVV is
$2.99 on the App Store for iPhone and iPad.
Invisible Apartment
looks like an interesting new app with very well-designed graphics and a
unique storyline. It is a cyberpunk visual novel about a girl hacker
struggling in a modern world, revolving around surveillance, hacking,
artificial intelligence and cybernetic implants in a high-tech society.
Invisible Apartment is
free on the App Store for iPad.
Twisty Planets
is a brand new puzzle platformer game for iPhone and iPad. Help a
little fella named Qub escape the twisty planets by finding stars to
open portals. Navigate springboards, moving platforms and teleports as
you progress, doing whatever it takes to find your way out of the 3D
planets. Twisty Planets is

Updated Apps

Our own Christian Zibreg informed us about an update to
Skitch
today that pushed the app to version 3.2 with several new features: a
new swipe design for starting new markups, improved saving and sharing
from Evernote, PDF sharing via social services, an improved toolbar for
annotating images and more. Skitch is
free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad.
Scanbot was
another popular app that received an update most recently, getting a
minor bump to version 2.0.1 with iPad support, the ability to scan QR
codes, an optimized grayscale filter and many other small improvements
and bug fixes. The PDF and QR code scanning app is
$1.99 on the App Store for iPhone, and also for iPad now that it is a universal app.
Amazon Music
was known as Amazon Cloud Player just yesterday, but it has been
renamed following the announcement of Amazon’s new streaming music
service Prime Music. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you will enjoy unlimited, ad-free streaming of music through this app. Prime Music is
free on the App Store and universal for iPhone and iPad.

Rounding off the updates on the day is
Flickr,
which now sits at version 3.1.0. What’s new is sharing your albums on
multiple social platforms, adding and editing photo tags and
descriptions, group admins can invite photos to a group, notifications
for invited photos in groups, performance improvements and more. Flickr
is
free on the App Store for iPhone.
On Sale Apps

By now, I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to give the line and circle game
Blek
a test drive. But if you haven’t, now is a good time. For a limited
time, the app has been discounted from $2.99 to just 99 cents to
celebrate being selected as an Apple Design Award Winner for 2014. Blek
is
99 cents on the App Store for iPhone and iPad while on sale.
Edge of Twilight – Athyr Above
has gone free for a limited time, down from its regular $1.99 price
tag. The post-apocalyptic game is based on a time when night and day
exist as two separate but parallel realms, as the newest edition to the
Edge of Twilight series. Edge of Twilight – Athyr Above is
free on the App Store, and universal for iPhone and iPad.
Thursday is always, barring rare circumstances, the busiest day on
the App Store in any given week. This is partially because Apple updated
the App Store on Thursdays to promote the best new apps and games,
alongside picking its new Editor’s Choice and App of the Week
selections. For the sake of my keyboard, and your scrollbar, we’ve
saved some of the new titles for tomorrow’s edition of App Recap. Now
get downloading, and we’ll see you right back here tomorrow.
