According to a quote by an anonymous Samsung executive in a Korea Times report, those rumors about Apple making a smaller iPad do have some weight.
As per Samsung executive, Apple has committed to buying at least $9.7 billion worth of components (displays, SSDs etc.) from Samsung within this year. The figure could even go up to $11 billion depending on demand. The executive slips in information about the 7.85 inch iPad when talking about this to The Korea Times:
'The contract is expected to rise to $11 billion by the end of this year as Apple is planning to release a smaller iPad, probably with a 7.85-inch screen, and to sell more of its MacBook Air PCs using Samsung's faster solid state drive (SSD) storage,'' the official said.
Apple is also interested in newer display technologies like PLS-based LCDs and OLED screens, the executive says. We've heard the same thing earlier as well, after a confidential Samsung Securities document leaked:
Following the success of its iPad 1 and iPad 2, which have together achieved sales of 55m units, Apple plans in 1Q12 to launch the iPad 3 and in 3Q12 a new 7-inch product temporarily referred to as the iPad mini.[...]Apple may yet decide to use flexible panels in its next iPad models, if panel makers can mass produce flexible AMOLED panels and improve resolution.
With so many rumors floating around, we can, with a high amount of certainty, say that Apple is definitely experimenting with a smaller, 7.85" inch iPad.
In a short span of time, the Kindle Fire's sales have crept up, helping the device secure the second spot in tablet sales and showing that there is indeed demand for a smaller sized tablet.
