Apple may open retail store in main hall of future World Trade Center mall

wtc-mall-appleAccording to a report from last year, Apple reportedly was one of several retailers interested in leasing space in the upcoming World Trade Center Mall. Two recent reports suggest Apple has, in fact, signed a deal to lease a spot in the mall and will open a new retail location when the mall opens next year.
The New York Post claimed in a report from last month that Apple, along with Canali, Hugo Boss, John Varvatos, Mont Blanc and Breitling, have all agreed to lease retail space in the mall’s main hall. According to TheRealDeal, Apple and other retailers were not pleased with the architectural design of the mall which includes underground retail space and arching white columns.
Computer and iPhone giant Apple — which is expected to take space in the project — was frustrated by the giant “ribs,” or columns, that Calatrava included throughout the underground portion of the site. The arching structures are spaced roughly 11 feet apart along the front portion of each store, which has put off some retailers who want to use that space for signage, branding or product display, sources said.
Apple even sought a design variance, but was turned down, said one retail source, who asked not to be identified..
Apple’s store reportedly will be located on the lower level of the mall and will be situated near well-known luxury brands Hugo Boss, Michael Kors and John Varvatos.
Is purchasing retail space in this high-profile mall a good move for Apple? Are you interested in another flagship retail store in NYC? Let us know in the comments.
