Apple’s widely expected to release an iPhone with a much larger screen, following the footsteps of rivals like Samsung, HTC and LG. Interestingly, the iPhone’s original 3.5-inch size was thought to be monstrously large in 2008, according to internal Samsung slides.

The slides acknowledged that the iPhone’s form factor “sets a new standard,” but that Samsung could exploit some of the customer concerns about the device’s size and durability in future phones. The slide includes quotes from users who didn’t seem to be too happy with the iPhone.
Its 3.5-inch size, which is considered to be tiny by today’s standards, was called “monstrously large” by a user from London, while another user from Singapore said that she preferred something that could fit in a ladies bag. Other concerns were that the iPhone was too fragile, and could be damaged easily.

Compared to phones in 2007, the 3.5 inch iPhone was definitely big, and a device with a giant touch screen and almost no buttons was very unusual back then. Samsung and other competitors starting catching up with the iPhone in 2010, and used larger screens as a differentiator.
Apple bumped the iPhone’s screen size from 3.5-inch to 4-inch in 2012, but customers now want even bigger screens, with 5-inches now being the standard size for flagship Android phones like the Galaxy S5 and HTC One. Apple seems to have recognized this demand, and is reportedly prepping an updated iPhone with 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch displays.
