Beats Music today hinted that an iPad app may be coming soon to the streaming music service. The company tweeted
a photo with the headline “Something Big Is Coming” and added “THIS
JUST IN: Your favorite Music App is feeling ready to grow in
size…literally…”
The addition of an iPad app to its line of mobile apps comes shortly after the company recently updated its iOS app, adding offline listening as well as the ability to purchase a subscription to the service from within the app. Though Apple now takes a 30 percent cut, Beats is betting that a boost in subscriber numbers will offset any extra money it will be paying to Apple.
This latest update propelled Beats to the top of the iOS music charts, but a separate report suggests Beats Music outlook is not so rosy. Billboard spoke to music labels who privately told the magazine that the service is struggling to gain new paying subscribers. While many users are signing up for the service, paid membership counts reportedly have been “disappointing”, climbing only to the low six figures. This compares to rival Spotify which has over 9 million paying subscribers and is close to crossing the 10 million mark.
